What is conservation and why is it important?
Most people equate conservation to protecting wildlife, but conservation is much more… It’s about protecting the world’s ecosystems which serve as Earth’s life support systems. We are all dependent upon these ecosystems; our food, our water, and our health all depend upon the function (health) of our planet’s ecosystems. Engaging in conservation means securing our future, protecting our livelihoods, and appreciating what the natural world provides us. |
Conservation Research:
Research conducted by diverse, interdisciplinary teams provides fundamental knowledge about the natural world. This knowledge is essential to developing innovative tools and effective conservation management practices and strategies.
Obtaining this knowledge will only occur if humanity learns the value of protecting nature. Communities that protect nature through sustainable use of natural resources will keep their ecosystem healthy (functional), and all species will thrive.
